How to write a book blurb
The blurb is a sales page wearing a linen jacket. It is not a synopsis. It does not mention your journey as a writer. Nobody cares yet.
Fiction
Four moves, in order:
- Hook. A concrete situation in one or two lines.
- Person. Who wants what. Not their résumé — their want.
- Clock. Why this can’t wait. A wedding, a diagnosis, a trial, a harvest, a ship that leaves.
- Question. The choice, not the ending. Never the ending.
Nonfiction
- The 2 a.m. problem, in the reader’s language.
- The cost of the old way.
- Your named mechanism — not “mindset.”
- Who it is for, and who should leave.
Under 180 words for the Amazon fold. You can add editorial quotes later. HTML in KDP descriptions is limited; test the preview. No ALL CAPS. No “if you like X, Y, Z” lists that name five bigger authors — Amazon’s metadata rules are twitchy, and it reads thirsty.
Draft one in the blurb writer, then cut every adjective you wouldn’t say to a friend.
About 1 minute.
